A house concert is the oldest way to hear great music: a piano, a room of friends and a pianist a few steps away. Here is how to host one well.

Before concert halls, the piano lived in salons: Chopin and Liszt played for a few dozen listeners in private rooms. The intimacy is the point — guests hear every colour of the instrument and see the hands that make it. The Las Vegas Sun described one of my salon concerts, given with the Mechta Trio in 2008, as “Intimate, masterful and free”.
Printed programmes, a short welcome from the host, phones away for the music itself and a toast afterwards turn an evening at home into something guests remember. A piece that matters to the host or the guest of honour, played last, is the finishing touch.
